Description of training provided
Wave 3 Fischer Family Trust Intervention Programme
Wave 3 FFT is a 10-20 week intervention programme delivered by a teaching assistant, aimed at Y1 & Y2 pupils and some Y3 & 4 pupils
A three day course to support raising attainment in early reading and writing
Target Audience: Literacy leaders, teachers and TAs
– It is recommended that one teacher accompanies TA delegates
The course aims to:
- Develop a deeper understanding of the needs of children who find it hard to learn to read and write
- Enhance the skills and knowledge of adults working in the classroom
- Give adults an effective structure to use when working with ‘hard-to-teach’ children
Day 1 will address ASSESSMENT with a focus on:
- Implementation of a range of assessment procedures
- Supporting practitioners in effective observation with an emphasis on analysing strengths,
- weaknesses, confusions and gaps in learning
Day 2 will address READING with a focus on:
- Revision of the reading process
- Structure of the reading day lesson
- Identifying learning objectives to accelerate progress
Day 3 will address WRITING with a focus on:
- Revision of Day 1 and 2
- Structure of the writing day lesson
- Identifying learning objectives to accelerate progress
N.B. Gap tasks will be set for implementation within school and outcomes discussed during the training days to ensure participants are familiar with the content and structure of the FFT Wave 3 programme, as well as feeling confident to implement the programme.

Boosting Reading Potential
Better Reading Partners is a 10 week highly structured intervention programme delivered by Teaching Assistants.
A two day course to support raising attainment in reading aimed at Y1 to Y6 pupils.
Target Audience: Literacy leaders, Teachers and TAs
(It is recommended a teacher accompanies TA delegates to ensure maximum impact on pupil attainment within your school)
This course will aim to address:
- Raising attainment in reading of:
- – KS1 pupils working within low average in relation to national
- expectations
- – KS2 pupils working within 2 years behind their chronological reading
- age
- Understanding of teaching strategies and prompts for successful decoding in reading
- Planning of book introductions and questioning skills to develop effective pupil comprehension of reading
- Effective analysis of pupils’ reading to inform next steps in learning and precision teaching

English Leadership Meeting
Termly updates, support and inspiration for your English, EYFS, Maths and PMFL Leaders
The Autumn English Leadership Meeting aims to address:
- Updates on current national priorities
- Preparing for the new English curriculum
The spring agenda will be confirmed during the autumn term in response to national developments.

Raising Attainment in KS2 and KS3 Reading: ‘Inference Training’
Inference training is a research-based group intervention for KS2 and KS3 pupils with a focus on teaching reading comprehension delivered by teachers or teaching assistants. This intervention programme supports accelerated pupil progress by an average of 12 months progress in comprehension age (2/3 sub levels) over a period of 10 weeks
A one-day course to support teachers and teaching assistants to raise attainment in reading both within the classroom setting and through use of intervention.
Target Audience: Literacy Leaders, KS2 & KS3 Teachers and TAs. (It is recommended a teacher accompanies TA delegates to ensure maximum impact on pupil attainment within your school)
This course aims to address:
- Raising attainment in reading for KS2 and KS3 pupils who have age appropriate decoding skills but who are experiencing difficulty acquiring full meaning and enjoyment from their reading
- Key characteristics of reading comprehension
- Explicit identification of individual pupil difficulties in comprehending texts
- How to deliver a structured approach to the teaching of inference intervention sessions
- Applying key principles of the inference intervention to quality first teaching within the classroom context
- How to evaluate impact on data and effectiveness

Talking Partners – A Speaking and Listening Intervention for EYFS to Y6 pupils
Talking Partners is a 10-week highly structured intervention programme delivered by Teaching Assistants. A two-day course to support the development of effective speaking and listening skills of pupils ranging from EYFS to Y6
Target Audience: English Subject Leaders, SENCos, Teachers and TAs
This course aims to address:
- The development of pupils’ confidence and competency to listen actively and communicate for a range of purposes
- Provision of a structured oral language programme to improve pupils’ speaking and listening skills
- Effective use of the strong links between oracy and literacy i.e. reading comprehension, talk for writing and grammatical structures
- Implications for quality first teaching using principles and practice of the intervention programme

Write Away Together
Write Away Together is an intervention strategy to improve writing in Y2 to Y6.A two half days course to support the effective teaching of writing through one to one and group intervention.
Target Audience: English Subject Leaders, Teachers and TAs.
This course aims to address:
- Provision of a clear structure for writing support
- Improving writing at text, sentence and word level
- Strategies to improve pupils’ independent writing
- Assessing the progress of pupils’ writing skills over time

KS2 Phonics and Spelling
One-day course aimed at supporting teachers to develop classroom practice in effective teaching of phonics and spelling
Target Audience: Literacy leaders and KS2 teachers
This course aims to address:
- Developing subject knowledge of the English spelling system
- Transition and progression between the teaching of phonics to spelling
- Implementation of a suggested model for the teaching of spelling based on ‘Support for Spelling’
- Differentiation
- Equipping children to develop their own strategies for learning to spell
- Supporting children’s application of phonics and spelling in the context of reading and writing
Practical Phonics for Teaching Assistants
A half day course to support teaching assistants to deliver effective daily phonics sessions
Target Audience: Reception to Y6 Teaching Assistants
This course will aim to address:
- Phonics subject knowledge
- Phonics development across phases 1- 5
- The 4 part teaching sequence of a daily phonics session – using multi-sensory and interactive activities
- Planning and teaching for group differentiation
- Supporting children’s application of phonics in the context of reading and writing

Supporting Reception & KS1 to Raise Attainment in Phonics
A one-day course to support the most effective phonics teaching and learning
Target Audience: Reception teachers, KS1 teachers, NQTs and Literacy Leaders
This course will aim to address:
- Pace and acceleration of progress
- Intervention and narrowing the gap in phonics attainment
- Further developing effective phonics practice and ensuring impact on reading and writing attainment
- Introducing a wider range of effective assessment tools
NB: If you have already attended our course ‘Supporting Y1 to Raise Attainment in Phonics’, you would not need to attend this course as well.
